Upward Bound Program

Course Description:

 

The purpose of this course is to develop advanced reading skills for students who plan to continue their formal education after high school. Specific content shall include, but not be limited to, instruction in vocabulary, comprehension, study skills, and test-taking skills. Students should improve literal, inferential, critical, and creative reading skills, as well as reading rate. The course will also utilize the Socratic Seminar Method.

Textbooks and Materials:

            Handouts will be given in class or posted on Blackboard

 

 

Blackboard:

The method of communication for this course will be through Blackboard.

Every typed assignment must be uploaded through safe assignments on blackboard. Please bring a hard copy of the assignment to class too.

 

 

Objectives to be covered:

 

  • Show improvement in overall reading skills, using the SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory) for evaluation.
  • Develop and apply skills and strategies of the reading process.
  • Develop and apply skills and strategies to comprehend, analyze and evaluate

fiction, poetry and drama from a variety of cultures and times.

  • Develop and apply skills and strategies to comprehend, analyze and evaluate

nonfiction from journals, periodicals, text books, biographies and essays.

General Expectations:

 

Plagiarism:

Any form of cheating on examinations or plagiarism on assigned papers constitutes unacceptable deceit and dishonesty. Disruption of the classroom or teaching environment is also unacceptable. This cannot be tolerated in the academic community and will be punishable, according to the seriousness of the offense, in conformity with this rule.

 

Classroom Rules:

Food: No food or gum is allowed in the classroom.

 

Electronic Devices: Electronic devices (cell phones, ipods, laptops, etc.) are not allowed in the classroom. If you bring an electronic device to class, the device will be given to an administrator.

Dress Code: Students must be in the Upward Bound uniform at all times

 

Materials: Handouts of the textbook and workbook will be provided by me, and these will be kept in the classroom. You will be provided with a notebook for your writing assignments and a binder. Both of these will also be kept in the classroom. You need to bring something to write with to class every day. If you forget a pen or pencil, one can be borrowed but you must provide me will some collateral (ID, backpack, etc.) which will be returned you return the borrowed item.

90-100= A                                          

80-89 = B                               

70-79 = C                                                       

60-69 = D

0-59 = F                    

           

Grades To Be Determined As Follows:

Participation in Class Discussions............10%

Besides good attendance and effective time management, students will be expected to complete the following on-going assignments to determine a letter grade for the course:

  • A beginning of course and end of course reading assessment.
  • Completion of instructional units of study relating to diverse written materials and use of the reading process.
  • Completion of weekly entries concerning independently selected reading material.
  • Independent selection, completion and evaluation of a variety of reading materials.
  • Complete a final examination at the end of the each semester.
